About this Course - CELTA — IH Bristol

Why is CELTA so valuable?

Three out of four English language teaching jobs require a CELTA qualification* making this course the gold standard if you want a job in TEFL. The CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the world’s most widely-recognised qualification for teaching English.

It is highly regarded globally by organisations which employ English language teachers. With a CELTA you can start a life-changing career helping students, and open the door to a world of possibilities.

It is a qualification from Cambridge Assessment English, which is part of the University of Cambridge.

Bristol is close to some of the UK’s most popular attractions. In just 15 minutes by train, you could visit Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its Georgian architecture and award-winning Roman Baths. A trip to the Southwest of England isn’t complete without visiting Stonehenge, exploring the history and cultural significance of this ancient stone circle.

Bristol International Airport has flights to and from most European countries and from all over the world via Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. There is a frequent bus service from the airport which brings people into the very centre of the city. There are two train stations serving Bristol: Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. From these stations it is possible to travel anywhere in the UK.

There is no underground metro system in Bristol, but all major bus routes pass within 25 metres of Queens Avenue, 2 minutes away from the school. Parking is not easy, although there are spaces if you are prepared to pay. We offer bicycle parking on the premises. It takes approximately 30 minutes to walk the 2.4km from Temple Meads Train Station to the school.

The coach station is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Queens Avenue, 1.4 km.

IH Bristol is less than 2 minutes from Queens Road, which has many restaurants and cafes, two supermarkets (Sainsbury’s and Waitrose), banks, a chemist, shoe repair, clothing shops as well as bars and nightclubs. There is even a centre for massage after a strenuous day of teaching!

To give you an idea of the cost of living in Bristol, one kilo of apples costs around £1.60, a single bus ticket costs around £2.50 and a restaurant meal costs around £20.

International House Bristol

Accommodation

IH Bristol can arrange either homestay or residential accommodation for trainees who come from outside of Bristol.

Homestay accommodation

Some trainees stay in homestay accommodation with a British host family. This allows non-UK residents to share family meals and experience English culture first-hand.

Our homestay hosts are families, couples and single people. We have chosen them for you because they have clean, comfortable homes near the school, and they offer a friendly welcome to our trainees. We want you to feel like one of the family. We visit all our host families regularly to make sure the accommodation they offer is of the highest standard.

When you arrive, your host will show you how to get to school on the first morning. Most hosts live within 20-30 minutes of the school on foot or by public transport.

Homestay families provide two meals a day, included in the price of your accommodation. You have a private bedroom with somewhere to put your clothes, and a table to work at. Every day you eat with members of the host family at breakfast and in the evening, and you can have meals together at weekends.

Self-catering homestay accommodation, where you live with a family but buy and cook all your food, is also available.

Student Residence

Liberty Park is a very high-quality student residence offering modern en-suite rooms which include a small kitchenette. It’s a 15-minute walk to the city centre and a five minute walk to IH Bristol on Queens Avenue. You can book via IH Bristol with your course booking.

Liz

I have been an EFL teacher for 25 years and a teacher trainer for 11 years. I taught in Greece, Portugal, and Italy before returning to the UK where I continued teaching at IH Bristol.

The advice I give to trainees is to always keep developing as a teacher – teach a wide range of ages and types of English to see what suits you, attend workshops and conferences, and read articles written by experienced EFL professionals.

Charlie

I have been an EFL teacher since 1991, when I first qualified on a CELTA. While I’ve had other jobs, teaching English has been my only career.

I encourage trainees to think about the students, to put them at the centre of their teaching decisions and where necessary to change or adapt the lesson material to make it more student-focussed.
